  2. He was patronized by the duke of Lorraine and
  3. perhaps also by Louis XIII. Many of his
  4. pictures are illuminated by a single source
  5. of light, with deep contrasts of light and
  6. shade. They range from religious paintings to
  7. domestic genre scenes. La Tour's style
  8. suggests a connection with the Dutch painters
  9. Honthorst and Terbrugghen, who were followers
  10. of Caravaggio, but it is distinctive, with
  11. fire or candlelight creating warm and glowing
  12. tones. His subjects include solitary women in
  13. domestic interiors.
